Rwanda has built a reputation as one of Africa's best-run and most scenic countries, nicknamed the "Land of a Thousand Hills" for its dramatic, terraced landscape. Volcanoes National Park, home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, is the country's main draw for travelers.

How It Compares to Uganda

Rwanda's gorilla permits typically cost more than Uganda's, but treks are often shorter given the terrain and the park's proximity to Kigali — a genuine tradeoff between price and convenience, not a simple "better or worse."

Kigali

The capital is notably clean and well-organized by regional standards, and most trips start and end there rather than treating it as a pass-through city.

Best Time to Visit

June to September and December to February, the two dry seasons, for the easiest trekking conditions.

Getting There

Fly into Kigali International Airport — Rwanda is usually treated as its own leg of a trip rather than a quick add-on to Tanzania, similar to Uganda.
