Tanzania Weather

Tanzania sits close to the equator, so temperatures stay relatively warm and stable year-round — the bigger variable for travelers is rainfall, not temperature.

Dry season — June to October

The long dry season. Little rain, clear skies, and the easiest general game viewing, since animals concentrate around remaining water sources. This is also peak tourist season, so parks and lodges are busier and pricier.

Short rains — November

Brief, often afternoon showers rather than all-day rain. Landscapes turn green quickly, and it's a quieter, lower-priced month to travel.

Long rains — March to May

The wettest period, with sustained rain possible most days in April. Some camps close during the wettest weeks. Prices drop significantly, and the scenery is at its lushest, but road conditions in some parks can be more difficult.

By region

The coast and Zanzibar follow a similar pattern but run slightly warmer and more humid year-round. Higher-altitude areas — the Ngorongoro Highlands, and Kilimanjaro itself — run noticeably cooler, especially at night; Kilimanjaro's summit stays below freezing regardless of season.
