What a real gorilla trek involves, and how to add it to a Tanzania trip
Uganda is home to roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorilla population, mostly trekked from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the country's southwest.
A guided hike through dense forest — sometimes short, sometimes several hours, depending entirely on where the assigned gorilla family has moved that morning — followed by a strictly limited one hour observing them at close range once found. It's physically real; trails aren't paved or gentle.
Gorilla trekking requires a permit, and only a limited number are issued per day per family group, which is exactly what keeps the experience from being overcrowded. Booking ahead matters here more than almost anywhere else on a Tanzania-adjacent itinerary.
June to August and December to February offer the driest trekking conditions — trails are muddy and harder work outside those windows, though treks still happen year-round.
Uganda isn't a quick add-on — flights and logistics mean it's genuinely its own leg of a trip, typically bookended by a Tanzania safari on one side.
