Stone Town is Zanzibar's historic capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a dense maze of narrow alleys shaped by centuries of overlapping Swahili, Arab, Persian, and Indian influence, distinct enough from the rest of Zanzibar that it deserves its own real plan rather than a single rushed afternoon.

What to Actually See

The old fort, the House of Wonders, and Zanzibar's famously carved wooden doors — no two quite alike — are the anchors most walking routes are built around, but Stone Town rewards simply getting lost in its alleys as much as any single sight.

The Old Slave Market Site

A genuinely sobering, important stop — Stone Town was once East Africa's largest slave-trading port, and the site now holds a memorial and museum addressing that history directly rather than glossing over it.

How Much Time It Deserves

A full day is a reasonable minimum for a real feel of the town, rather than the half-day stopover it sometimes gets squeezed into between the airport and a beach resort.

Getting Around

Stone Town is genuinely a walking town — the alleys are too narrow for most vehicles, and that's precisely what gives it its character.
