Serengeti vs Ngorongoro: Which Should You Choose?

Most Northern Circuit itineraries include both, since they sit close together — but if you're genuinely choosing between them, here's what actually differs.

Scale

The Serengeti is vast — roughly 14,750 square kilometers of varied terrain. Ngorongoro Crater is contained — about 260 square kilometers, walled in by a natural rim. That difference shapes everything else.

Wildlife Density vs Space

Ngorongoro's enclosed geography concentrates wildlife into a smaller area, often making sightings feel more immediate and frequent within a single day. The Serengeti trades that density for scale and variety — different landscapes within one park, and a real chance at the Great Migration depending on timing.

Rhino, Specifically

If seeing black rhino matters to you, Ngorongoro is genuinely the stronger choice — one of the few reliable places in Tanzania to find them.

Time Commitment

Ngorongoro can be done thoroughly in a single full day. The Serengeti rewards at least two nights to actually settle in.

The Honest Recommendation

If you can only choose one and want maximum wildlife density in limited time, Ngorongoro. If you want the classic open-plains safari feel and have more time to give it, the Serengeti. Most travelers, given the option, do both — they're a short drive apart.
