The Serengeti is the park most people picture when they imagine an African safari — roughly 14,750 square kilometers of open plains, acacia woodland, and riverine forest, and the stage for the Great Migration, the largest movement of land mammals on Earth.

What Makes It Different

Unlike smaller parks where wildlife concentrates around a handful of water sources, the Serengeti is genuinely vast. That means real variety within a single park — the short-grass plains in the south feel completely different from the riverine forest in the north, and where you stay changes what kind of safari you actually get.

When to Go, and Why It Matters Here Specifically

The Serengeti isn't a "visit any time" park in the way some others are — the migration's location genuinely shifts through the year, so timing changes what you'll actually see. June through October puts you in the north, with a real shot at a Mara River crossing. December through March puts you in the south, during calving season, when the plains fill with newborn wildebeest and the predators that follow them. Neither is "better" — they're different trips.

Getting There

Most visitors fly into Kilimanjaro or Arusha, then either drive in via Ngorongoro (a genuinely spectacular route in its own right) or take a short scheduled flight directly into one of the Serengeti's airstrips.

How Long to Stay

Two nights is a reasonable minimum to actually settle in rather than just passing through. Three or more gives real room for the wildlife and weather to cooperate, and lets you explore more than one part of the park.
