Mikumi Travel Guide

Mikumi National Park is part of a larger ecosystem connected to Nyerere National Park (formerly the Selous Game Reserve), and its open Mkata floodplain is often compared to the Serengeti for its wide grass plains and generally good visibility.

Why It's Different From the Northern Parks

At around 3,230 square kilometers, Mikumi is genuinely one of the most accessible parks from Dar es Salaam — a real option for travelers based on the coast who want a legitimate safari without a long transfer to the northern circuit.

What to Expect

Open plains game viewing similar in feel to the Serengeti, though with lower visitor numbers and less-developed infrastructure — a genuine tradeoff between convenience and the polish of the more famous parks.

Getting There

About a four to five hour drive from Dar es Salaam, making it realistically doable as a shorter add-on rather than requiring a full northern-circuit-length trip.

Best Time to Visit

June through October, the dry season, when wildlife concentrates and roads are easiest to travel.
