Lake Manyara Travel Guide

Lake Manyara sits beneath the dramatic escarpment wall of the Great Rift Valley, with a landscape that shifts from dense groundwater forest to open grassland to the lake itself over a surprisingly short distance for a park just 330 square kilometers in size.

The Tree-Climbing Lions

Manyara is best known for an unusual, not-fully-explained behavior: lions here climb trees, something not typical of the species elsewhere. Sightings aren't guaranteed on any single visit, but it's the park's signature draw.

Birdlife and the Lake Itself

Over a third of the park is water, and when conditions are right, flocks of flamingos gather along the shoreline — Manyara is a genuinely strong stop for birdwatchers, not just a big-mammal park.

Best Time to Visit

June to October for wildlife concentration generally; November through May tends to be better specifically for birdlife and the flamingo flocks, since water levels and conditions shift seasonally.

About a 90-minute drive from Arusha, and directly on the route toward Ngorongoro and the Serengeti — most travelers pass through rather than making a special trip.
