A real comparison of two genuinely different primate experiences
Both are genuine, remarkable wildlife experiences, but they differ enough in practice that it's worth understanding the real distinctions before choosing.
Gorilla trekking: Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, or Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park. Chimpanzee trekking: Tanzania's own Gombe Stream National Park, on Lake Tanganyika.
Gorilla treks culminate in a strictly limited one-hour observation of a large, calm family group. Chimpanzee treks tend to involve more movement — chimps are more active and arboreal, so following them can mean more sustained hiking.
Both involve real forest hiking with genuine elevation change, though chimp trekking at Gombe's steep hills is often the more physically demanding of the two.
Gorilla permits are expensive and limited, requiring advance booking. Gombe is more remote (boat access from Kigoma) but the trekking itself is typically more affordable.
If proximity to a Tanzania safari matters, Gombe's chimps are the more naturally-paired option. If the specific goal is gorillas, that means genuinely committing to a Uganda or Rwanda extension.
