Burigi-Chato Travel Guide

Burigi-Chato National Park was officially gazetted in 2019, formed from the Burigi and Biharamulo game reserves near Lake Victoria in northwestern Tanzania. At roughly 4,707 square kilometers, it's the country's fifth-largest national park — and because it's so new, it remains genuinely off the beaten path.

What's There

The landscape spans freshwater lakes, papyrus swamps, and rolling savanna, with wildlife populations that are still building back up following decades as a less-managed reserve rather than a formal park.

Why Visit

Honestly: for travelers who specifically want a genuinely uncrowded safari, away from the vehicle traffic of the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. This isn't the park for guaranteed Big Five sightings — it's the park for having a landscape largely to yourself.

Getting There

Accessible from Mwanza, near Lake Victoria — a genuinely different entry point than the usual Arusha-based northern circuit route.

June to October, the dry season, for the most accessible roads and easiest wildlife viewing.
