Big Five Safari Guide

The "Big Five" — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino — originally referred to the five animals considered most dangerous to hunt on foot. Today it's shorthand for a strong, complete safari, though it's worth being upfront: sightings of wild animals are never guaranteed on any single trip.

Where Each Is Most Reliable

Lion: Widespread across the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, among the more commonly seen of the five.
Elephant: Tarangire specifically, known for some of Tanzania's largest herds.
Buffalo: Common throughout most parks, rarely the hardest of the five to find.
Leopard: Genuinely the most elusive — solitary and often well-hidden in trees; the Serengeti gives a real but not certain chance.
Rhino: By far the rarest. Ngorongoro Crater is one of the few reliable places in Tanzania to see black rhino at all.

Maximizing Real Chances

A longer trip across more than one park meaningfully improves your odds of seeing all five, simply through more time and more varied terrain — there's no shortcut beyond that.
