It's About Grass, Not Habit

Wildebeest are grazers, and short, nutrient-rich grass is what they're actually chasing. Rain triggers fresh growth, and the herds follow it — which is why the migration's timing shifts with rainfall patterns rather than a fixed calendar date.

The Southern Plains and Calving

Roughly December through March, the herds gather on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area — nutrient-dense volcanic soil produces exactly the grass pregnant wildebeest need. This is also calving season: hundreds of thousands of calves born within a few weeks, a deliberate strategy that overwhelms predators with more prey than they can possibly take.

Why They Cross Rivers At All

As the southern grass is grazed down and dries out, the herds move north in search of fresh grazing — a journey that happens to cross the Grumeti and Mara Rivers, producing the dramatic crossings most associated with the migration. The crossing itself isn't the goal; it's simply what stands between the herd and better grass on the other side.
